Description
A quick, refreshing, and fizzy drink made with fresh strawberries, citrus zest, and sparkling water. This simple hack balances sweet and tart flavors for a mood-lifting summer beverage.
Ingredients
- Fresh strawberries (ripe, hulled, and sliced)
- Orange or lemon (for zest and juice)
- Sparkling water or club soda (plain, unsweetened)
- Honey or agave nectar (1-2 tablespoons)
- Fresh mint leaves (optional)
- Ice cubes
Instructions
- Wash and hull the strawberries, then slice them in half and place them in a highball or Collins glass.
- Zest the citrus fruit directly over the berries to release essential oils, then squeeze the juice of half the fruit into the glass, discarding seeds.
- Add honey or agave nectar to the glass.
- Gently muddle the berries, citrus zest, and sweetener with a muddler or wooden spoon to create a syrup at the bottom. Do not shred the rind.
- Fill the glass to the top with ice cubes.
- Slowly pour sparkling water over the ice to preserve carbonation.
- Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint and a slice of strawberry or orange on the rim.
- Gently stir to mix the syrup with the soda and serve immediately.
Notes
Do not over-muddle the citrus zest to avoid releasing bitter oils from the pith. Use cold ingredients to keep the drink chilled without over-diluting. If the drink is too sweet, add more soda; if too tart, add more honey. The fruit-honey syrup can be made ahead and stored in the fridge for up to three days.
