Description
A refreshing, authentic Southern sweet tea made with a simple syrup method for perfect sweetness and a zesty lemon finish. This easy recipe yields a crisp, bold brew perfect for summer gatherings.
Ingredients
Scale
- 8 to 10 black tea bags (or 4 tablespoons loose leaf tea)
- 4 cups water (for brewing)
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup hot water (for simple syrup)
- 4 cups cold or iced water (for dilution)
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice (optional)
Instructions
- Boil 4 cups of water in a stainless steel pot until at a rolling boil.
- Remove the pot from heat and add the tea bags or loose leaf tea. Steep for 5 minutes. Do not squeeze the bags to avoid bitterness.
- While the tea steeps, combine 1 cup of sugar and 1 cup of hot water in a small saucepan. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the sugar is completely dissolved (about 2-3 minutes). Do not boil the syrup.
- Remove the tea bags or strain the loose leaf tea out of the brewed concentrate.
- Pour the hot tea concentrate into a large glass pitcher. Add the simple syrup and stir well.
- Add 4 cups of cold or iced water to the pitcher and stir to combine.
- Let the tea cool to room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours to allow flavors to meld.
- Serve over fresh ice with a squeeze of lemon juice for a zesty finish.
Notes
Do not squeeze the tea bags as this releases tannins that make the tea bitter. The simple syrup method ensures the sugar dissolves completely for a smooth texture. For a caffeine-free version, use decaf tea bags. The tea can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
