Description
Homemade hoagie rolls with a thin, crisp crust and soft, airy interior. These versatile yeast breads are perfect for subs, burgers, and sandwiches, offering a professional bakery texture using simple pantry ingredients.
Ingredients
Scale
- 500g (4 cups) All-Purpose Flour
- 300ml (1 1/4 cups) Warm Water (105°F-110°F)
- 7g (1 packet) Active Dry Yeast
- 2 tablespoons Sugar
- 2 teaspoons Salt
- 2 tablespoons Olive Oil or Vegetable Oil
- 1 Egg (beaten, for optional egg wash)
Instructions
- Activate the yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm water and sugar. Sprinkle yeast over the top and stir gently. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- Mix the dough: In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well and pour in the yeast mixture and olive oil. Mix with a wooden spoon or hands until a shaggy dough forms (2-3 minutes).
- Knead the dough: Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Perform the windowpane test to check readiness.
- First rise: Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl. Cover with plastic wrap or a damp towel. Let rise in a warm, draft-free place for 1-1.5 hours until doubled in size.
- Shape the rolls: Punch down the dough to release air. Divide into 6 equal pieces. Shape each into an oval or cylinder, pinching seams tight. Place on baking sheets with 2 inches of space between rolls.
- Second rise: Cover shaped rolls and let rise again for 30-45 minutes until puffy and jiggly. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) during the last 15 minutes.
- Bake: Brush rolls with egg wash if desired. Bake for 15-18 minutes until golden brown and internal temperature reaches 190°F (88°C). Rotate pans halfway through.
- Cool: Remove from oven. Brush with melted butter if desired. Cool on a wire rack for at least 20 minutes before slicing.
Notes
For a crispier crust, place a pan of hot water on the bottom rack of the oven during baking to create steam. Ensure water temperature is between 105°F and 110°F to activate yeast without killing it. Do not over-flour the dough; it should be tacky, not sticky. Rolls can be frozen for up to 3 months.
